Not every crack is a structural event. Fine cosmetic cracking in render behaves very differently from a stepped crack through brickwork that widens toward the eaves. Assessment records width, direction, taper and location, compares them against how the footing system should behave, and only then settles the repair scope.

Timing
When it's needed
Stepped cracking through mortar joints, cracks wider than a few millimetres that taper, gaps opening between cornice and ceiling, or cracking that reappears after previous patching all justify assessment. So does cracking that arrived suddenly after a wet winter or a long dry spell, Sydney clays respond to both.
Sudden large cracks, walls visibly out of plumb, or masonry that sounds hollow and drummy overhead can indicate unstable structure. Keep people away from affected areas, avoid slamming doors in distressed walls, and seek urgent engineering advice rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
